Look, they keep putting me in XLR8R. Seriously, because I have written for this publication for like 6 or 7 years, I have been a featured contributor like three times already. But they keep coming back for more!! Last time this little punk ass local nightlife photographer whose-name-I-will-not-mention got his hands on a copy and lectured me on how the picture was not flattering, and how I don't know how to hold my face for a camera. So this time around I used a more professional pic that another, less-punk-ass nightlife photographer friend of mine took. Just when you're feeling good about yrself, along comes Jarrett Spiegel to kick yr self esteem in the nuts. He e-mailed this to me today. Obvies, he has too much time on his hands.

Got Body if You Want it...

Though I haven't been following (or covering) much rock these past two years, I started hanging around some of my indie rock friends again recently and they took me to see The Prairie Cartel a couple weeks ago. If you are looking for the next local band-to-watch, I'd wager this is it, unless you count my friend Bill's awesome noise rock band, These Are Powers, who split their time between here and brooklyn.

At any rate, The Prairie Cartel will play tonight at Outdanced! (Funky Buddha Lounge), which is $5 cover ($3 if you RSVP), and will be worth every penny when you hear them play "Homicyde," a funk-rock track that derails at the end to an absurd chant, "homo / homo / homo / homo." If you can't make it tonight, they also spin a DJ set Thurs. night at The Burlington.

Since I'm making this post all about plugs, I'll also mention here that my friend Damon of another local band you should know, The Eternals, is also spinning a DJ set Thurs. night at Danny's. type='text'>He's a Gemini, So Stay on the Friendly Side...

About the only thing I'm listening to this week is the work of a DJ duo composed of Hadji Bakara, who also plays in the band Wolf Parade, and Rob Squire, a producer I came to know as a teenager as Sixtoo, then making plodding, petulant production that fit peripherally into the backpacker hip-hop genre, but even then was industrially influenced in a way that made it a sort of class of its own. Squire has recently recast himself as Speakerbruiser. He and Bakara are based in Montreal, a city where French electro, British drum and bass, and Caribbean soca and reggae clash as a result of the city's immigrant strongholds and unique cultural history. Squire relocated to the city (he is originally from its rural Canadian outskirts), which is home now more than ever to a burgeoning club rap and hipster party scene that's given birth to senior and freshman acts like Chromeo, A-Trak, Thunderheist and Wolf Parade. His DJ sets -- far from the isolationist (maybe even nihilist) production of his younger years -- are suddenly reflective of that relevance, with playlists akin to those of taste making, party-pleasing DJs, albeit with a unique twist. He and Bakara haven't abandoned the weird industrial palate of sounds: Their sets are composed of mostly original remixes of popular mainstream rap, reggae or indie rap acapellas, but laden with heavy synthetic overlays. Even their version of Justin Timberlake's "My Love" is infused with a dark, futuristic Caribbean flavor, replete with low, elastic, synthetic bass and metal drums. Here's an original remix of a Ghislain Poirier and Face-T track; and here's an extended mixtape.

Mutant Sandwhich

I bought this sub in Decatur, Illinois after a day or so of eating nothing but chips and candy bars on my greyhound bus trip. My copy, which is old and yellow and used to belong to my mother when she was young, is too personal for me to loan out. I was so moved by the story that I scrawled love poems of my own in all its margins.

For someone who hasn't read this book, I don't know how the movie will fly. They pulled scenes and conversations and narrations verbatim from the book; Marquez's words are the most beautiful thing about the film, and it's awesome how some things I rushed past while reading here really come to life. Some of the acting is bad, however: Particularly John Leguizamo's painful rendition of Fermina Daza's father. For anyone who has not read this, it's a very complicated story about love that makes you feel like you are in the grasp of a boa constrictor and love that sets you free, sex that helps you find love and sex that helps you escape from love. But it finds its focal point in a lifelong love not realized until the couple is in their '70s, which is very romantic on paper but in film requires a sort of icky old people sex scene that made me cringe.

I think for the first time I realized the soul of Marquez's story, though I have thought I'd found it before and was wrong: Every love is an illusion. It simply depends on which illusions we choose to commit to.
American Scream

On Wednesday, March 19, don't miss Don De Grazia and others read at Columbia College's Story week. When I was 15 years old, De Grazia came to my high school and did a workshop with me and 6 other students. He had just published his awesome novel, American Skin, abroad, but it'd be a couple years before an American publisher would have the guts to pick it up, so it wasn't till I was 18 that I got to read the thing in full and realize how fully rad the man is. American Skin is sort of like a much softer core American History X (it's about skin heads, but not the racist kind -- which is a distinction very important to some kids here in Chicago though I've never heard of it elsewhere) told with the same coming-of-age narrative style as Hairstyles of the Damned, which means that he landmarks it with songs and specifically Chicago cultural geography. If you live in Chicago, you should read it if simply to reminisce about those days when Belmont and Clark was the local Mecca for homeless punks, who would line the streets and alleyways and wait for the youth work vans to deliver brown bag meals a couple times daily. Does anyone else ever wonder what ever happened to all those homeless punks? Did they shape up and get jobs that earn enough wages to move to Bridgeport and Pilsen communal living spaces, or are they just relocated to other cities, where punk culture still thrives? Maybe De Grazia knows.

Weds. She was giving "a voice to people who people don't listen to," because gang bangers, drug dealers and Native Americans couldn't possibly write their own books about poverty, or the miscegenation of black and Native culture, or rough urban life. I think the writer makes a pretty basic point here: These Islamic games flip the narrative of pretty standard American war games, though many would like to charge them as being more inventively twisted in nature. The piece kind of goes nowhere beyond that, however, which is disappointing.

I never play war video games, so if you do, and you'd like to share yr deeper insights, I'd love to hear them.

And thanks to Hec for the link.

More The Roots

Back with their second video in like a week. This is good and bad news. Good news for fans, like me, for obvious reasons. Bad news because people who visit the internet website youtube.com tend to be bottom of the barrell types, the lowest of the low, also like me.

The groups documentary, "Heima", will be shown in it's entirety. Other than that I'm not sure what a front page dedication consists of.

Their lyrics aren't Icelandic, they claim that it's all "gibberish" (I never knew that) and their interviews aren't very exciting..

I have a soft spot for their dream-like music videos, which aren't very exciting either. I also jump at any oppurtunity to post up my not-so-gangster music while trying to pass it off as "news", as to avoid receiving anymore "warning" e-mails from fellow RBC staff (kidding).

Re-supply Gang

Would be a harder name than Re-Up.

"Fuck the re-up, son. If Hillary wins Texas and Ohio she lives for another day, and questions start swirling Obama on if he can close the deal. If Obama wins either Texas or Ohio its a done deal he will be the nominee of the Democrats. But I was feeling all down this morning because all the polls show Hilllary ahead and gaining momentum.

In all fairness it has been a tough week for Obama, the Somali garb photo came out

The Rezko trail has arrived and Obama is foolishly still refusing to take hard questioning on his relationship with Rezko. Obama cut a press conference short after only 8 questions on Rezko when the best thing that someone like Obama could do; a candidate who is slangin hope and change, is to have a two hour question and answer period the way McCain did about the New York Times Lobbyist story with the caveat that afterwards he will take no more questions. It would give the impression to voters that hes down to be transperent but also willing to stand up to the press and it would change the narrative of the press being soft on Obama. If Obama followed the McCain strategy regarding Rezko he would innoculate himself against the false accusation that he is unwilling to take tough questioning regarding his friendship with Rezko.

Theres is also NAFTA Gate, which places Obama chief economic advisor telling the Canadian government that Obama's Anti NAFTA stance is just rhetoric for the Dem primary.

But by far the most insidious event of this week is the the continued smear campaign that Obama is a Muslim Manchurian Canidate , which entered a new phase when Hillary spoke to the issue on 60 minutes. When asked if she thought Barack was a Muslim she responded that "there nothing to base that on, as far as I know". Such a statement implies that there is maybe something we don't know, when Hillary could've denounced and rejected the rumor as she had Obama do regarding Farrakhan's support.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LHFREDHB-nQ&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"width="425" height="355">

So yeah tough week for Obama but then i saw this video on Jack and Jills blog and I was inspired so much so that I was in tears (I know so emoooo!!!!). But theres nothing like hearing from the organizers on the ground to make you start feeling like everything will be okay.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pzvxkCUJkfA&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"width="425" height="355"></objec

I'm switching to Boost mobile...

<img style="display:block;

I joke; RBC has nothing to do with latest travesty of Black Liberation Co-option Street wear. And I mean come on, all over print fists. When can we let the all over print go the way of polka dots. Oh wait kids in Wicker park still rock polka dots like they have black cousin name Kwame but I’m digressing.

The shoes are coming out to commemorate Tommie Smith who in 1968 along with John Carlos pump there fist in protest of the US policies toward African Americans. Ironically Tommie and John wore no shoes at the ceremony to symbolize the poverty of black America. Not so ironically one must assume Tommie nor John will receive any of the profits made from the shoes. But still since "we have come so far" Puma decided to make a shoe with black fist print all over in honor of this moment in history. At a certain point one has to be like what the fuck is with this shit. It’s one thing when a indie company like Creative Recs or Supra does some shit like this but let’s not dilutes ourselves. Puma is a multinational corporation that made 766 million for their old rich white exceptive board last year, they could give flying fuck about Black liberation or the history of it unless it somehow fattens there pockets first. If they gave a fuck they would sponsor free school programs(that’s right a majority of Africa does not have a public school system) in Africa instead of soccer teams, and would pay for after school programs in America instead some bougie back to Africa Fela Kuti Revival that ignores the fact that the man died from AIDS.
Yeah I’m bitter , very bitter. How did that influence you in your rap career?

That’s where me and Hav(oc) met. Basically the only reason I went to that school is cause all my friends from my neighborhood went there. It didn’t really have that much to do with art. I had to take a test to get in there. I used to do some little graffiti type characters, and they accepted me in. I was always interested in drawing, little cartoon characters and graffiti art, but I wasn’t too serious into it. When I met Hav in the school, we was running around getting in trouble, and we found out we both had an interest in rap music. Me and Hav started cutting out of school going to the studio and the first thing we did right away was something special. Our first name was Poetical Prophets. It fit us, but it didn’t really fit how we was living our life. So we wanted to change our name to really describe how we was living.

You’ve been emphatic that you’re a rapper and not a criminal. But you are still rapping about murder on H.N.I.C. 2. How do you explain that?

If I’m rapping about anything like that, I’m talking about a situation of self-defense. Anytime we say something like that, we don’t speak recklessly, we don’t tell anyone to go out there and murder and kill. We’re trying to bring a message to people: what life is like in the hood and what we go through. We came into the game when we was like 14, 15 years old. We said a lot of reckless shit back then. But as we got older, you will hear exactly what Mobb Deep mean and what we talk about.

You speak about spirituality on the new song “My World Is Empty Without You.” Can you elaborate your beliefs?

I mean I’m not a religious person. I’m a spiritual person. I believe I got my own connection with the creator. I don’t believe in a lot of these religions and a lot of these things that the government and the system and the way they raised us and the things that they did to my people in the past. That gives me the right not to believe a lot of the shit they teach us. About my own connection with the creator -- that’s how it’s supposed to be. We didn’t have a bible, we had our own connection with the people.

Are you a conspiracy theorist?

I mean it’s definitely not theory, it’s fact. If you do the homework you’ll see. You’ll start to see on the dot. The more you dig deep, the more you’ll start connecting all the dots. It’s definitely a conspiracy against our freedoms. I just read a lot about history and my people, other cultures. History of religion, about foods and ingredients.

The Inimitable MC Juiceboxxx.

Discuss.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BAHjDim8EZw&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"width="425" height="355">

White People Blog

Why is this the funniest/most on point blog..

also, my apologies if I'm late on this..

Stuff White People Like

#75 Threatening to Move to Canada
February 24, 2008 by clander

Often times, white people get frustrated with the state of their country. They do not like the President, or Congress, or the health care system, or the illegal status of Marijuana. Whenever they are presented with a situation that seems unreasonable to them, their first instinct is to threaten to move to Canada.

For example, if you are watching TV with white people and there is a piece on the news about that they do not agree with, they are likely to declare “ok, that’s it, I’m moving to Canada.”

Though they will never actually move to Canada, the act of declaring that they are willing to undertake the journey is very symbolic in white culture. It shows that their dedication to their lifestyle and beliefs are so strong, that they would consider packing up their entire lives and moving to a country that is only slightly similar to the one they live in now.

Within white culture, it is agreed upon that if Canada had better weather it would be a perfect place.

Being aware that this information can be used quite easily to gain the trust of white people. Whenever they say, “I’m moving to Canada,” you must immediately respond with “I have relatives in Canada.”

They will then expect you to tell them about how Canada has a perfect healthcare system, legalized everything, and no crime. Though not true, it will reassure them that they are making the right choice by saying they want to move there.

But be warned, they will reference you in future conversations and possibly call on you to settle disputes about Canadian tax rates. So use this advice only if you plan to do some basic research.

Note: Canadian white people threaten to move to Europe.

Note: Europeans are unable to threaten to move anywhere.

So You Think You Can Juke?

I wrote a piece on Mr. Factz for The Fader's iissue 51.

NahRight.com was forthright about calling Factz a "hipster rapper," which is also a phrase getting tossed out about rappers like SpankRock, Kid Sister and Yo Majesty. It probably makes no difference at all, but for me Factz is a slightly different breed, albeit related. He, Curtains and Kapps are more akin to Cool Kid rappers: They wax endlessly about their rare, collectable gear that you probably never have heard of, and niche cultural trends. It's not so much about partying till the break of dawn and then going home to finish the fucking you started on the dancefloor, as with the aforementioned club rappers, above. Also, the production has some markedly different characteristics. Though Factz does draw from electro, house, and even trance and techno, he applies those genres with a particularly New York sensibility, and in more of an across-the-board sort of way, rather than drawing from just one regional sound, a la Spank from B-more club, Kid Sis from Chicago juke, and Tampa's Yo Majesty, funnily enough, from British electro. Finally, Factz, Kapps, Curtains and even the Cool Kids may, at the end of the day, have production that lends itself to being more palatable in the mainstream: They aren't generally pushing BPMs upwards of 160 -- a tempo that'll clear any dancefloor unfamiliar with more hardcore juking, new rave or footwork styles of dancing.

Anyway, I like Factz, though I don't care much about his Supras. You can download all his mixtapes for free here.

If voting changed anything, it would be illegal.

You don't have to agree with me.

The shit you find, or the shit that finds you??

So there I am on the 6 the other night, going home, minding my own business, and I look next to me and see a few folded up scraps of a Newport 100's carton. Females don't like you, people yell things out of their car at you, and you have to watch your back always (mostly for people yelling things out of their car at you).

This 1992 PSA from the El Paso Police Department, ment to stear kids away from gang life, using a catchy rap tune and shocking images, did just the opposite for me. It reminded me of just how big of a loser I am. I like rap music alright. But at the same time, I've always secretly wanted to wear Raiders clothing and hang out around trash can fires with my guys like I was in the Wu-Tang Clan. And if that's not enough, there were parts of this video that I felt were speaking directly to me. For instance, they show a close up of a young gentlemans jacket while he's using a payphone. The jacket has the mans name embroided on the back in old english. Now, how could they have possibly known, without knowing me, that a "KOOCH" old english embroiderd jacket (or hat) is in my top 5 things that I want most in this world? They couldnt have. Thats what's so fucked about this whole thing right now..

"It Must Be Said..."

I am not much of a fashion critic, but I do know Tilda Swinton showed up to the Oscars looking like a eunich from the cast of HBO's Rome.

Jiggy Era

Inspired by Prince Charles and his love for Bad Boy.

During the mid to late 90's era of jiggyness, I was so wrapped up in keeping hiphop "real" (whatever that means now), that I slept on a few years of some pretty good music. Ok, I wasn't asleep entirely. I was more like napping, I guess you could say, because I did like some stuff (wasn't like I was going to let you know that though).

Nowadays, backpack rap sucks, mostly. Crunk was funny to me for a second. I live in close proximity to Texas, so I went kind of crazy with the whole Houston/Swishahouse thing for a while. Dipset was original and they had bangin' production (Heatmakerz). Mashups were cute when they were ironic still. But really, all and all rap has been pretty uninspiring this decade. Now I'll even go as far as to say that it sucks. I'm not trying to debate that, it's just one mans opinion (not that of the blogs), that not even a Nas/Premier album would be able to change at this point.

The more I became less impressed with the way hiphop was going, the more I was being asked to play out at clubs and parties, the more jiggy music started to appeal to me.

So now I'm on Youtube fucking around. Here are some videos I came across. It's not like I dug way deep in the crate or anything. And it's not like I have a lot of time or the greatest memory either. But you should remember these..

One of my favs..

<param name="movie" This J. Hoberman article is phenomenal. Even if you loved Knocked Up, as I did, you will recognize the inversion of choice (ie. pro life agenda) when it's called out.

Here is the soul of its thesis:

"There can be no female agency in Knocked Up, Waitress, and Juno—not because they are comedies, but because, in each scenario, unwanted pregnancy is the joke played (by God?) on the female lead. As the most successful of the preg protags, she who is Knocked Up is necessarily the most smacked down—the glass ceiling turns out to be Alison's own uterus. Jenna and Juno are less formidable, but unexpected fertility mocks their dreams of autonomy. All three are taught their place by their own bodies—and what's more, they learn to like it."

Failure to Launch

I guess the link was broken to the V-day mix I posted on Thurs. Everyone has AIDS." i mean, they could have just called it AIDs for sure. it also made being a junkie in the '90s in the lower east side look like being a 9 year old at disney world and that made me think, maybe its not all bologna sandwiches in the bullpen and blow jobs in porta-potties for a hit, and I've been wasting my time in aa for all these years. but i was too overcome with the "what the fuck" sense you get at the end of Syriana after seeing it for the first time to do anything about that.

besides the exemplary cast and acting (an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Clooney), I was thinking about it today and i don't think i've seen another movie that did as good of a job as Syriana at highlighting and actually explaining things like political nuances within a nation-state, cultural pluralism, religion, statecraft and other topics which play huge parts in shaping the global political spectrum that we live in today. It's true you you have to watch the entire thing from start to finish and you cannot let your attention slip for a second in order to understand the movie, but the pay-off is well worth it.

its also true the name is a metaphor for foreign intervention in the middle east, taken from a post-WW2 think tank of strategic studies for the creation of an artificial state, (such as Iraq -- does anyone know how Iraq was made? yup, white guys in britain carving up a map) that would ensure continued Western access to crude oil.

the director himself, stephen gaghan said he saw Syriana as "a great word that could stand for man's perpetual hope of remaking any geographic region to suit his own needs."

today, syria and half of lebanon and the Gaza Strip and Iran and maybe even pakistan and afghanistan, seem to not suit our needs very well. what will we do about that?

this charlie rose interview with stephan gaghan (director of syriana) blew my fucking mind. for real. i know its 54 minutes or whatever, but that shit was amazing and dude is one of those people you just want to listen to, amazingly well spoken and insightful. really a pleasure to hear what he brings to the table. brilliant!

When I Went To School In Olympia...

Dead Prez was playing a college show (do they play anything else these days?) on Valentine's Day in Olympia, Washington, and their crowd broke into a riot. When a campus police officer arrested one civilian, rioters reportedly surrounded the car and demanded the individual's release. Backup arrived, the detainee was released, and then rioters escalated their antagonisms, flipping a police car and busting out its windows. Oh, and Dead Prez played "Fuck the Police" while this was all going down. You can read the full story here.

Let me take this opportunity to say that white people go fucking crazy at Dead Prez shows. I saw them perform at the Sommerville Ampitheater -- which is not hood -- in Medford, Massachusetts back in 2001, and all these dreadlocked white doods started lighting dollar bills on fire and head banging. I left immediately. When people are burning cash there is no telling what they're likely to do next. And moreover, Dead Prez has never said anything about not liking money itself. Rather, they've complained that some people (crackers in city hall) have too much of it, and that poor righteous rappers don't have enough (you wonder why we feel like fuck the law).

Top 5 Indie Movies You Probably Haven't Seen But Should, Installment 1.

Mail Order Wife
2004

If you like thinking about the complex ethical issues involved in making a documentary, this movie is for you. If you think that last statement was too boring to bear, this movie is also for you. Mail Order Bride is neither a documentary nor an overly thinky movie. It's a movie that tricks you into thinking it's a documentary for the first 30 or 40 minutes or so, until you realize its premise is far too absurd to be real. The result is a feature film that blatantly addresses pretty much every politically and culturally sensitive issue involved in making a documentary film, while managing to wholly avoid ever using a snoozefest of a word like "ethics." I highly recommend it. I'm more naive than most people so I watched the whole thing in an utterly astounded state, then called a friend to rant about how fucked up it was before she could interrupt me to be like, "uh, duh, it's fake." But don't worry. Knowing it's fake from jump should not dispel any of the enjoyment yr likely to garner from it.

Ok it is a good movie.

Finally saw Juno last night, and surprisingly it surpassed the hype that was dumped on it. I mean great soundtrack, great writing, and great characters. It was over the top in the sense that I know very few 16-year-olds who talk with such intellectual dexterity, but it was enchanting nonetheless. Also the mid'90s feel was uplifting, especially if you grew up in that era, even though it just seemed like a small town in America that was stuck in the mid-'90s. Either way the nostalgic value is there. Now I know there has been overall criticisms that it’s an anti abortion film, but folks should give it chance before making those judgments.
I would say more but I don’t want to ruin it. And again the soundtrack is phenomenal. Kimya Dawson has been putting in her work for a while. A friend from D.C. put me on to her about 4 years ago when the documentary Afro- Punk just came out and finding black folks who did rock music was all the rage. That was before TV on the Radio and Bloc Party made it played out. Anywayz enjoy. So here is the breakdown of where things stand, as simply as we can frame it. Right now the delegates are split as follows.

Barack
1096 pledged
157 super delegates
-------------
1253 total

Hillary
977 pledged
234 super delegates
-------------
1211 total

Super delegates are an entirely separate conversation, which we'll post later about -- but for now the main thing to focus on is the total number of delegates on the side of each candidate. Barack takes that lead. Of course the tides can sway -- half the U.S. still has to vote -- but Barack is not only leading in total delegates but also in the popular vote and the number of won states.

The video below breaks down the state of the Democaratic primary further, for those who are interested. Considering the lopsidedness of his 8 past wins, Barack is on the verge of finding the straw that will break Hillary's back. Whats most significant about his most recent win in Virginia is that Barack has been able to chip away at Hillary's coalition of white women, latino and working class voters. In Viginia he made significant in-roads with white women and working class voters. Now Hillary needs to win Texas, Ohio and Penslvania by the same margins Barack won these past 8 contests. Which means by 19 percentage points or more -- the smallest margin of Barack's wins (Maine) in the past 8 states since Super Tuesday. Good luck sista!!!!

BAD LOVE SONGS THAT WE LISTEN TO......

HAPPY V DAY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask a Rat!

This is a link to my friend Jayson Musson's new column. But I'd like to take a moment to reflect on Friday night's Diplo/Blaqstarr show at Smartbar, which made me feel like a dinosaur at age 26. Arguably, I am -- particularly if measured on terms of the "mash-up" scene, to which I am slowly losing any last vestige of loyalty.

First and foremost, I don't know when Diplo shows switched gears from hipster to dooshbag central. Perhaps hipsters have simply moved on to the newer, cheaper shows. I know Pase Rock played somewhere else that night, likely for much less than $15. Diplo's set itself -- though I only stayed the first 45 minutes -- was rife with bad techno. Is bad techno trendy now? One fan showed up with glowsticks in hand -- which I initially took for an ironic (if not played out) hipster joke -- but I guess it's me who didn't get the memo. This was Soundbar at Smartbar night: Diplo channeling Tiesto. I usually don't mind a little jaunt deep into Diplo's mindgarden with obscure Baile Funk or Soca, but techno seems a desperate stretch in the wrong direction. I like pounding bass, elastic drumlines and plaintiff vocals, not atmospheric breakdowns with emphasis on the middies.

Blaqstarr brings no complaints from me. I am not played out on B-more club yet, and especially not his particular brand of it, which lilts with bubblegum R&B vocals sung by the man himself. In Baltimore, B-more club is expectedly huge. It gets big commercial radio play, drawing a fanbase of mostly teenagers -- a parallel to Chicago's own Juke. But the genre is known, like Juke, for being hyper sexualized. So Blaqstarr's uber-positive take on lyrics (he's also known to feature the raps of 16-year-old Baltimorian Rye-Rye, who recently toured with M.I.A.) -- girls aren't hoes just b/c they're down-ass-bitches sort of material -- are refreshing.

Lastly, it's making me wince to mention the show's opener, Hood Radio, who I'm told but haven't been able to verify, is local. We arrived early to check these guys out on the good word of a trusted friend, but were sorely disappointed. Based on the set we witnessed, this is nothing more than yet another bad mash-up duo. To be clear on where I stand: The very idea of a mash-up for me is cringe-inducing. You have to differentiate between making a good cross-genre DJ set, like what Hollertronix or Floss are known for, and stripping the acapella of one song and putting it over the instrumental of another. The latter, the actual technical term for a "mash-up," is not exclusively bad and can sometimes work within the context of a greater set, if well done and well-placed. But Hood Radio seems to be jumping on the band wagon of creating a whole set of mash-up after mash-up, which is actually not an easy thing to dance to, or listen to. It takes a lot of work to catch the new rhythm, structure and organization of a good rap acapella over a good indie rock melody, and often, it ruins both original tracks in the process.

We Enjoyed this Immensely

Courtesy of Prince C.

The Wire, Post Episode 5

We've been oscilating b/w adulation and weariness as the plot of the fifth and final season of HBO's The Wire develops. The almost-husband follows discussion on Salon.com, which I found to be pretty stimulating in its post-episode 5 wrap-up. Here are a few reactions to and elaborations of things I think they may have skimmed too lightly over.

I especially liked comments about the omar/marlo conflict, which is coming to a head -- I agree that it's some of the best stuff in the show this season. Character-wise, omar is like the gift that keeps on giving. I would like to hear a little more about what peoples' predictions are for the outcome of the conflict, however, as I'm doubtful about how the writers can pull off another Omar victory without being trite and moralistic, but at the same time i think audiences will be very unfulfilled if Marlo wins. It's clear omar is not going to get away squeeky clean this time -- he's already suffered a couple serious losses/blows -- but for him to sacrifice his life for the victory (ie. he wins but dies in the process, another possible outcome), would be sort of cliche too. Would him winning and walking away be too hard to swallow, like him making that leap out of the building and surviving? I'm interested to see how they get themselves out of this bind.

I liked when they talked on salon.com about the plot's allusions to the current political climate. To me omar is the conscience of the streets, versus Marlo as unchecked power. I was going to say that makes it very good vs. evil but i think it's less black and white than that, more like Id vs. Superego or something like that. Omar is an unlikely hero with lots of ethical cache. I believe comparisons have been made between him and pirates, or terrorists. But if marlo is a totalitarian regime, Omar is better likened to a particularly American ideology of democracy. He's fighting, ultimately, for a free market in the hood, the right for capitalistic enterprises to battle it out vs. a monopoly on business and power. If you wanna flip that narrative and say that ultimately America, despite what we spout rhetorically, IS the totalitarian regime, I buy that too, but Omar would have to stand for a bit more concrete of a doctrine than the "right to be left alone" for me to fully digest him as a guerilla hero of the people. Omar's profession is essentially parasitic. He needs the free market competition in order to sustain his own modes of production (ie. hijacking stashes, stickups, etc.). Therefore, he isn't a terrorist in the sense of desiring a complete system overthrow, but rather an ethical police in maintaining the system's status quo. In essence, the system needs this x-factor to sustain itself, and he needs the system to sustain himself. It's actually quite a good model for the theory of Rational Choice, or rather, the idea that the market will police itself.

I think at the heart of this season is the idea of necessary evil. That's a theme hitting us over the head in Mcnulty's branch of the plot, obviously, but i think it's also everywhere else to be found. The yellow journalist (I agree, he is an obnoxious character, but perhaps characteristically/intentionally so, b/c so is the portrait of every yellow journalist i can think of in a dramatic plot -- have you seen Shattered Glass?) is generating revenues for a paper otherwise failing, and also helping, inevitably, to bust the clear and present "bad guy" (Marlo), no matter how morally grey the entire process. No one will dispute the idea that Marlo should -- no, HAS TO -- fall. Carcetti is doing the best he can with what he's got, but his pride keeps him from doing better. we are left liking him, while also recognizing the complex systemic obstacles blocking him from doing better, and wondering if he can simply raise the stakes and rise in power, could he do any better? ie. are compromises in Baltimore in the short term worth it for his rise to governor, more power and possibly long term change with greater range? And moreover, do we trust the strength of his character to make it untainted on that journey? I really liked comparisons to Obama on that level.

I like the wire b/c it paints a big picture by collaging minutia, and avoids drawing tidy moral conclusions. I think they're feeling a bit more pressure to do that very thing, however, now that the show is wrapping up for good. Ultimately that's what bugs us: The places where the need for audience fulfillment -- ie. tied up loose ends -- bucks up against the very strength of the show, that they constantly leave loose ends b/c loose ends are endemic to the nature of the story they are telling, and not in some art school ending sort of way just-for-the-sake-of-suspense, ie. the last sopranos episode.

What Up, World?

I know we have been lagging on the posts lately but buhlee me there is stuff simmering on the RBC stoves. type='text'>RACE WARS - When White America Strikes Back!!!!!!!!!

An interesting video I thought. Hillary is coming to the realization that while diamonds are forever, political dynasties aren't. Hillary at this point is shaking in her boots. Latest polls show Barack ahead with 33 percent to Hillary's 29 percent.

So now that she is behind and realizes the democratic nomination isn’t her birthright, her campaign strategy has shifted to trying to talk trash on Obama. But unlike normal trash talking they have taken it to a level of racial, ethnic, and even religious stereotyping and baiting that i havent seen since .. well wait, i have never seen a viable black man run for president so i guess i have nothing to compare this lastest conflict in Race Wars to. Moving on. The notables, being Barack doing cocaine as a shorty (which Barack has admitted to, and written about in his autobiography) and being accused of possibly being a drug dealer because he admitted to getting high when he was young. Bill Shaheen, the man who put out the question of if Barack was a drug dealer, and also New Hampshire co-chair of Hillary's campaign, resigned after he started getting flack for the comment. But then Hillary decided to contradict her own campaign and said Bill Sheenan was asked to step down. Whether he resigned or was forced to leave its not a good sign when your New Hampshire co chair steps down. But check out the first minute of the video it pretty much breaks down the gist of what im talking about.

But the bigger question is why Bill Clinton didn’t ever get accused of being a drug dealer because of his admitted drug use.

And though the Clinton Camp has gotten rid of Bill Sheenan, they seem to have done this so that they could keep referencing Barack cocaine use as exhibited by this video of Mark Penn, Campaign Consultant for Hillary's Campaign.

Then comes along Bob Kerry (Clinton Supporter) as if he was on the payroll of Fox News, referring to Barack as Barack Hussein Obama, insinuating that Barack is running from who he is and his "Muslim" roots because he won’t refer to himself as Barack Hussein Obama. Oh like Hillary "that’s right no one knows her middle name cuz no one cares" Clinton, or John "since when we did we start caring about politicians middle names" Edwards are held to the same standard. No of course not, so why is Barack being held to that standard. That’s right it’s called the R-word. Let’s stay it all together RACISM!!!!!!! Naw but on the real it obvious in this video that Bob Kerry is doing the trick of acting like you are giving a compliment to a opponent when in fact you are attacking him on things voters would perceive as going to far.

So being called a coke head, drug dealer and being lectured on how and why you should use your middle name - Hmmmm, just a day in the life of being young, black, gifted and running for president.

And the Crossover begins!!!!!!

SHIT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, 12/19/07

Giveaways all night! already seen this movie, but i just had to write about it. i believe it to possibly be the most honest, profound and brutal piece of modern cinema to emerge in years. i found to be deeply compelling and (gulp) political, because of its underpinnings of subjective morality, and the dehumanization of ourselves as a society. it makes the clear point that in the end we have no one to blame but ourselves.

numerous movie critics have pointed out the coen brothers using this movie as a venue to make thinly veiled comments about our countries military involvement in iraq and the demoralization to our collective psyche that comes along with it, or just ask Alec Balwin at type='text'>Not that I didn't have shit to do today...

But the cable guy came, and suddenly I have full access to The Wire, Season 4, at my fingertips. Yes, Matt Dike (nh) did produce for Tone Loc, Young MC and the Beastie Boys, but I think we can file this one under "career indiscretions," like that time I saw Busta Rhymes pee on the NYC sidewalk one morning at 5 a.m. and tell some white bitches to go fuck themselves. Like white bitches don't buy Mountain Dew!!!! For shame Busta!

So for this, Mike Dike gets the "Dood Quit Playin'" award of the week. So we thought it only appropriate to put together this lil’ mixtape of sample gems off the album, which we think is more comprehensive than any list anyone else has put together on the blogosphere so far. I also threw on the Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band “Sunshowers” cut for good measure as well, even though it’s off M.I.A.’s first LP. Ghostface sampled the same track for “Ghost Showers,” off his 2001 album, Bulletproof Wallets. (We think M.I.A. retooled it better.) And Ghost has borrowed from the Savannah Band before: On his 2000 classic Supreme Clientelle he assimilated Buzzard’s “Cherchez La Femme” into “Cherchez La Ghost.” Now ya can’t say RBC didn’t teach ya nothing.

z-share link.

Vice Makes Good?

This is the full edit of my piece that got hacked by a local publication we all know and love. I recommend you read this version rather than the one in print. It's sorta long but if you've found Vice both compelling and repulsive for years, as we at RBC have, you'll welcome the opportunity to hear co-founder Shane Smith speak on the evolution of the mag and his latest project, VBS.tv, which we think is pretty dope.
Seven years ago the idea of Vice Magazine making earnest news stories would have struck most people as absurd, and still others as offensive. It’s hard to forget that the company virtually pioneered an anti-PC movement, much less forgive it. “Being a mag in New York, you kind of get lost in this vortex of parties and drugs and all this stuff,” says co-founder and company president Shane Smith, 37. “When we started traveling around more we started seeing that there are a lot of things happening that are important. I guess when we started going to gun markets and realizing you can buy dirty bombs on the black market we were like, ‘Well, it’s over. That’s the end of history. That’s the end of culture.’ It seemed that writing about denim and rare sneakers just didn’t measure up anymore.”

When the magazine began its expansion into 22 countries in 1999 – including Australia, Japan and Russia – Smith realized there were more story possibilities than any of the magazine’s editions could handle in print. So he started VBS.tv, a Web site of documentary-style video stories about music and culture, but predominantly (and perhaps most surprisingly) global politics. Smith leads quite a few of the shorts himself, traveling to divided regions like Darfur, Iraq or North Korea. You might take or leave his American-guy-abroad approach to reporting – walking through the desert in Sudan the realization strikes him on camera, “In the states you get so used to booze and food and coke and super models, and you come here and it’s like, water” – but at the very least it’s unsettlingly honest and sincere. And the stories are sound: They’re reported straightforwardly, and the producers travel to places they’re not supposed to go so the film shows footage you don’t normally get to see.

We caught up with the founder of the veritable hipster media empire to get the scoop on his new project, and what fueled the turnaround of the most drippingly sarcastic publication around.
Can you begin by articulating the mission of VBS.tv?

It seems to me that modern media -- especially news media -- has sort of failed over the past five years, and admittedly so. We wanted to create something that could sort of be a bridge between creative people and the money to get what they want to say out. When we followed the only heavy metal band in Baghdad for three years you see as a backdrop what happened there because of the American presence. They can’t go outside. Their practice space is hit by a scud missile. Their friends were killed. But they’re guys that you can relate to. When kids turn on CNN -- if they even do which they don’t -- they sort of see, ‘Another hundred people killed in Baghdad,’ and they just turn it off again. Whereas when they watch something like heavy metal in Baghdad they say, ‘Oh, I’m in a band, I know someone in a band, I can relate to that. Oh, their practice space got blown up by us.’

Basically what we found is that there is a very limited counter cultural voice in America. Everyone talks about, ‘The liberal media, the liberal media’ -- there’s no such thing as liberal media here because there are four media companies that own everything and they’re all afraid of losing Budweiser as their advertiser. We wanted to make a countercultural voice that was bigger and you could have an alternative to Fox news.

Vice as an entity has gone from this kind of “I don’t give a fuck attitude” to tackling bigger issues quite a bit less sarcastically. Can you talk about that shift?

I think it came about with the expansion of the magazine into 22 other countries, because Europe’s [version of the magazine] was a bit more serious than us and I’d say, ‘Hey, this is a really great magazine that we’re doing here.’ Jesse Pearson and Eric Lavoi, who are both younger than (Vice co-founder) Suroosh Alvi and myself, they had different attitudes toward things and wanted to take it in a different direction. At the same time as Suroosh and I got older we got interested in different things. And the philosophy behind Vice magazine was always, ‘Well if we figure it’s interesting other people should figure it’s interesting.’ And in the 13 years we’ve been doing this we’ve never just said, ‘We’re this type of magazine and we’re gonna be like that.’ We’ve changed about 20 times. It just seemed that writing about denim and rare sneakers didn’t measure up anymore.

In one short you buy a dirty bomb with relative ease, and another takes audiences into a gun making market. It’s not like you just stumbled upon these really secret sorts of things. Can you talk about how you even get this information?

It came about from our expansion. We have 2,500 freelancers around the world in many countries, and we can only use so many articles for the mag. So a lot of content was just going by the wayside. Gun markets in Pakistan isn’t going to make it into the fashion issue but we should still go do something on it.

Because we’re a free mag distributed in local outlets, people feel that there’s a big interaction with us. So we get not only our freelancers but our audience says, “What about this? Have you heard about this thing?” So coming up with the stories isn’t the problem. Going out and shooting them is the problem.

You have an interesting personal reporting style. Can you talk a bit about the sort of travel guide approach you take in the pieces you lead?

I can’t really do it another way. To do so it would be fake. Young people have pretty sophisticated bullshit detectors. I’m not CNN, and I don’t really go crazy and research my pieces that much. I’m not there to solve the problems of the Middle East, but when some guy tells me they’re making 4 or 5 year old kids into transportation devices for dynamite I can say, “Look that’s an intrinsically bad thing. I don’t care who’s right or wrong that’s just an intrinsically bad thing.” I went into North Korea with these guys from Newsweek and Time and they’d already made up their minds. They were really sort of paradigmic, and they had all their questions made up before they went there. And I was like, “I don’t know anything about North Korea!” How am I supposed to know what questions to ask? I can base all my questions on things that I’ve read or researched from books by other people who have never been to North Korea. But it’s like – I’m gonna go there and it’s gonna affect me and how that affects me is the story. It’s the same thing with Sudan.

I always find that when you go to the places and talk to the people you’re going to get an interesting point of view on it rather than sort of just taking what the mainstream media is feeding you. I’m not trying to be Dan Rather. I’m just saying, hey I’m a regular guy just like you guys and I went there and this is what I saw. And you can take it or not take it, I don’t mind.
